Aid to Zambia

Zambia is considered one of the more stable countries in Africa, but is also one of the more unequal. Over 40 percent of the population lives in extreme poverty and more than half of the children under five are malnourished. The situation is also extremely difficult with a large shortage of hospitals, doctors and medical staff.

Zambia has had a strong economic development for several years, partly because of the availability of copper. But life for the majority of the people living in poverty has not gotten better. The situation becomes more difficult when recurring drought affects the crops. In addition, many children have lost their parents as a result of HIV and AIDS - just over half a million children are estimated to have become orphans.

Ongoing Projects

Schooling for orphans and poor children
One of our latest project in Zambia is to provide children with schooling. Especially girls are vulnerable and education minimizes the risk of a future economic gap between women and men and also the risk of girls getting married while they are still children.
Here you can read more about schooling for orphans and poor children.

Hospital trips for children
Since autumn 2013, HOPE587 has an ongoing collaboration with Beit CURE Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. The Children's Hospital is one of the few hospitals that meets the surgical needs of children with disabilities. The children who come to the hospital are very poor and have no opportunity to pay for the important care they need and here they get it for free. We help children who are living in poverty and cannot afford transport to the hospital by paying for their hospital trip.
Here you can read more about hospital trips for children.

The Chicken Project
Providing chickens is a good way to help poor families to increase their self-sufficiency. It is a new start for many where the breeding soon gives adult hens who produces eggs to eat. The spillover of eggs can be sold in markets and to neighbors. For the income, the family can buy food and medicine as well as fund education for the children in the family.
Here you can read more about the Chicken Project.

Completed Projects

Patient Hostel
HOPE587 has during 2020 funded the furnishing and interior décor for a new built patient hostel at Bet Cure Hospital. For years this building will serve the patients and their care takers and improve quality of health care.
Here you can read more about the Patient Hostel.

Training Center
There is a huge lack of educated healthcare professionals in Zambia. Therefore, HOPE587, together with CURE International US and Beit Trust UK was able to built a training center in the hospital area of Lusaka which was finished in 2018.
Here you can read more about the Training Center.

Soup kitchen and food for starving families

As drought hit Zambia we were able to help with food during three of the most critical months in 2020. Many of the children in the village where we help with schooling were starving. We therefore set up soup kitchens at the school and we also helped the most vulnerable families so that they did not starve.
Here you can read more about soup kitchens and food for starving families.

Clothing Sewing
For some years during we had a project to especially empower women. Mothers who accompany their children to the hospital were given the opportunity to get out of poverty by being taught how to make dresses and how to tailor. They also learn how to use a machine that knits clothes. As they would return home, they were able to start their own business and thus get an improved financial situation. HOPE587 provided a financial contribution for the purchase of the stitching and sewing machines.
Here you can read more about Empowering Women - Clothing Sewing.

Short-term missions
Depending on what we can bring in our suitcases as we travel to Zambia, there will be different selective efforts. Nutritious food, sandals, children's clothes, knitted caps, mosquito nets, and sampling devices. The list of what can make life better for people in Zambia can be made long.
Here you can read more about Short-term Missions.

Spreading the Bible
In addition to English, there are seven official languages in Zambia and we were able to hand out Bibels in their own language to cartakers who were at Beit Cure Hospital. Also, the hospital staff was given Bibles.
