Patient Hostel in Zambia

HOPE587 funds furnishing and interior déco

A letter from Beit CURE Hospital:

Patient Hostel 18 th December 2020

We are pleased to share that the Patient Hostel project was completed through the Beit Trusts generous funding and the furnishing and interior décor done through the generous support of HOPE587. Project Objective: To construct a hostel for patients and their caretakers on the compound of the Beit CURE Hospital of Zambia. Process and highlights: The finalizing of the design process was critical to the excellent outcome of the building. The senior management team along with other members of the medical and hospital team were involved in the whole process to ensure that the end results would meet the needs of the patients and provide the best flow of care in the long-term.

The process took some time, however, having the team involved and led by CURE’s Project Engineer, helped to ensure that all needs were being met and that this building will be a critical pieces of the hospital infrastructure for years to come. The construction phase of the project ran smoothly with the daily oversight from CURE’s Project Engineer. Proper health and safety were followed by SIMU Construction (as per Zambian government standards and CURE International requirements). No injuries occurred on the site.

Thankfully, the construction was able to stay on course through the especially difficult months of COVID. The contractor was able to continue sourcing the required materials without major delays. One reason for this was that at the signing of the contract BCH allowed an advance payment of forty percent of the total contract amount, so that the contractor could order a significant amount of the materials for the project at the start of construction. And this allowed the construction schedule to not be delayed when imports into Zambia were delayed because of COVID.

SIMU Construction, followed good working practices, using proper tools for each type of work including levels, string-lines, concrete mixers, and metal scaffolding. The contractor always kept clear pathways around the site and kept the building works clear and clean from the start of the works to completion. Overall, the construction had no issues. The building was handed over to BCH and the majority of the punch list / snag list items have already been remedied by the contractor.

BCH was able to dedicate the building and show the hospital co-workers the new building. With funding from Hope587, the CURE team was able to promptly start the furnishing of the hotel and also doing the interior decorating so that the hostel could be utilized immediately. The funding from Hope587 was used to procure beds, beddings, curtains, storage wooden shelves, children’s chairs, chairs for the parents seating area and caperts and other decoration to make the hostel habitable and homely for the patients and the parents/guardians.

The hostel has begun to be used and BCH looks forward to the many years that this building will serve the patients and their care takers and improve quality of health care being provided by BCH. BCH is thankful for the long-term partnership that the Beit Trust and HOPE587 have provided. The impact of the investment has created exponential dividends in providing quality pediatric orthopedic, plastics, and ear, nose, & throat services to thousands of people each year. Most of the families we serve are from disadvantaged communities and would otherwise not afford to pay the market price for the service they receive at BCH.
